What is a Thyroid/Soft Tissue Neck Ultrasound?
A thyroid or soft tissue neck ultrasound is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves (not radiation) to take detailed pictures of the thyroid gland and other soft tissues in your neck.

How does it work?
You’ll lie comfortably on your back while a warm gel is applied to your neck. A small handheld device called a transducer is gently moved across the area. The sound waves create images on a screen, allowing the provider to see the size, shape, and structure of the thyroid and nearby tissues.

Why is it important?
This type of ultrasound helps providers check for thyroid nodules, cysts, swelling, or other changes in the neck. It’s often used to monitor known thyroid conditions or to investigate symptoms like a lump, swelling, or difficulty swallowing. It’s a quick, non-invasive way to give your care team valuable information and guide the best next steps for your health.
