What is a Carotid Ultrasound?
A carotid ultrasound is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves (not radiation) to take pictures of the carotid arteries in your neck. These are the main arteries that carry blood from your heart to your brain.

How does it work?
While you lie comfortably on your back, a warm gel is applied to your neck. A small handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the area to create real-time images on a screen. The test shows both the structure of your arteries and how blood is flowing through them.

Why is it important?
Carotid ultrasounds help providers check for blockages, narrowing, or plaque buildup in the arteries—issues that can increase the risk of stroke. It’s a quick, non-invasive way to give your care team valuable information about your circulation and guide the best care to keep you healthy.
