What is a Venous Ultrasound?
A venous ultrasound is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves (not radiation) to create pictures of the veins in your upper and lower extremities, most often in the legs.

How does it work?
You’ll lie comfortably while a warm gel is applied to the skin. A small handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the area to capture images. This shows how blood is flowing through your veins in real time.

Why is it important?
Venous ultrasounds are often used to look for blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT), check for vein problems like varicose veins, or see how well blood is moving back toward the heart. It’s a quick, non-invasive way to give your provider important information to protect your health and guide treatment if needed.
