Renal Ultrasound

What is a Renal Ultrasound?
A renal ultrasound is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves (not radiation) to take pictures of both of your kidneys and pre- and post-void bladder.

How does it work?
You’ll lie comfortably while a warm gel is placed on your abdomen and sides. A small handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the skin, creating real-time images of your kidneys and bladder on a screen. The exam is quick and non-invasive, with no needles or radiation.

Why is it important?
Renal ultrasounds help providers check for kidney stones, cysts, blockages, infections, or other concerns that may affect how your kidneys and bladder work. It’s an easy, reliable way to give your care team important information and guide the right treatment for your health
Patient Preparation
Patients should drink 32 ounces of water one hour prior to the exam to ensure a full bladder. After the full pre-void bladder has been evaluated the patient will be asked to empty their bladder to obtain post void imaging.
If for some reason you are unable to complete the preparation please let us know at the time of booking.
